There are various methods for effectively marking up a book:
- Underlining: Highlights key points or powerful statements.
- Vertical lines in the margin: Reinforces an already underlined statement.
- Stars or asterisks in the margin: Used sparingly to highlight the most critical statements. You might also fold the page corner where these marks appear for easy reference later.
- Numbers in the margin: Shows the progression of points within a single argument.
- Page numbers in the margin: Indicates where related ideas appear elsewhere in the book, helping to connect concepts spread across different pages.
- Circling key words or phrases.
- Writing in the margins or at the top/bottom of the page: This is for noting questions, simplifying complex discussions, or tracking the main points throughout the book. I also create a personal index on the end-papers at the back, listing the author's points in order.
